SONG TO THE SIRENS

Song to the Sirens refers to the irresisteble siren songs that were the doom of seamen and adventurers, as told in the tales of Ulysses, amongst others. For the five lifesize gypsum statues, the shapes of women are translated into a modern one, with manga-like big eyes, very feminine, with a hip section that is superproportional like of greek centaurs.

The statues form a circle in a tall white room, where they are sitting on sockets above face level, so one has to look up to them. The light is very bright and dazzling. The actual Song to the Sirens comes from speakers that are built in the sockets. A camera system detects the presence and movements of people getting close to or inside the circle while a computersystem uses this data to affect the sound. Each external presence within the circle is considered a disturbance and lets the system start to destroy the composition, thus the pure und unaltered song is only audible by the sirens in their "unbroken" circle.
